Jessie and Hudson celebrated their marriage in an intimate mountain elopement in Asheville, NC with their close friends. Jessica of Three Region Photography and I arrived in Asheville on Friday afternoon and started the weekend off with a trip to the courthouse to get Jessie and Hudson legally hitched.
It was my first time participating in a courthouse wedding. While we waited for their turn, Jessie & Hudson took photos with Jessica around the courthouse which has really amazing architectural and artistic details. The ceremony itself was short and sweet, but lots of fun. We all filed into the small courtroom and cheered for them as they officially tied the knot. Fun fact, this was the first instance where I ever saw an officiant ask if anyone objected to this marriage! I thought no one did that anymore!
Then the couple and their pals were off to their “bachelor/ette” parties in downtown Asheville while Jessica and I prepped for the mountain elopement in morning! We also definitely had delicious food and beers, because duh, it’s Asheville.
The alarm went off at 4am and we dragged ourselves out of the comfy beds at our Airbnb to drive up to Craggy Gardens on the Blue Ridge Parkway. Turns out that driving on the Blue Ridge before dawn is a bit terrifying. You could see the faintest outline of the mountains as the sky started to brighten, but that only reminded me just how high up we were and how windy the roads were!
Also, it is mega cold on top of those mountains at 5 am – even in August. It was windy and like 45 degrees. We didn’t bring jackets.
Jessie & Hudson arrived and we began our mile long hike up to the Craggy Gardens summit. This trail is gorgeous, lined with rhododendron tunnels and dotted with scenic overlooks even before you get to the summit. And it’s not terribly difficult to navigate in a dress or suite, important to note if you are planning a mountain top elopement.
Following the epic mountain top photoshoot, we trekked back down the mountain to meet Jessie & Hudson’s friends at the Craggy Gardens picnic area for their elopement ceremony. Officiated by their friend, their ceremony included a beer unity ceremony and an exchange of their personal vows.
Back at their Airbnb, we set up a mid-century modern inspired brunch reception featuring an incredible Pittsburgh Cookie Table! The Cookie Table tradition is one that keeps popping up with my clients, I guess I work with a lot of Pittsburgh natives! But I love this tradition because guests and family members provide their favorite cookies to share and it’s always a hit, and delicious! And with only about 12 people in attendance, and over 200 cookies, we were eating cookies all the way home and for a few days after as well!
Jessie, Hudson, and their friends then set out for a brewery & pub crawl through downtown Asheville to keep the party going! We helped them develop the route for the pub crawl based on my own in-depth knowledge of the craft beer scene in Asheville and considering their own personal tastes in beer and dining.
We provided the bouquets, centerpieces, and Jessie’s flower crown, as well as much of the decor for the brunch reception. Drawing inspiration from the mountains and Asheville itself, the unique design of their Airbnb, and the locally sourced flowers we had available at the time. With dahlias being in the prime of their season locally, we wanted to highlight them in the florals and then accented them with garden roses and other farm direct flowers!
There really is nothing better than spending a weekend with your favorite people in the mountains, and I was so glad to be a part of this special weekend and to feel like family with this awesome group of folks.
