Even Wedding Planners get married too! Check out the highlights of our summery rock club wedding in Durham, NC at Motorco Music Hall! We knew that we wanted to have a small, budget friendly wedding with a lot of personality! We focused on having great food and beers, a unique ceremony, a cocktail party atmosphere, and a full weekend of fun for our many out of town guests! Big thanks to the lovely vendors that helped make it possible!

We kicked off festivities the day before the wedding with a Welcome Party at my sister’s house in the country. It was a fun outdoor BBQ pool party coordinated by our families. Later that night we moved the party to downtown Durham before turning in at our hotel for the night.

Up bright and early, we set up the venue and got into hair and makeup! Huge thanks for family and friends who helped with set-up and decorating! Since we opted to have a cocktail style party in the same space as our ceremony, it was easy to set up the cocktail tables, and centerpieces from the start, rather than having to flip the room after the ceremony. The ceremony space then became a great photo backdrop!

I designed and created all of the decor with the help of my sister (my Maid of Honor). The Himmeli geometric centerpieces, backdrop garland, and our flower crowns were created with silk flowers. Our bouquets were fresh flowers that I arranged from Whole Foods and Trader Joes. We spent a stupid amount of time working on tissue tassels and bunting flags, but they were very cute!

We chose to have an afternoon wedding in part to save money, but also to allow us to pretty much party all day! Guests arrived around noon and we kicked off the event with our amazing ceremony, written by Kenna Covington of NC Secular Weddings. She created an incredibly personal, unique and bad-ass ceremony that was gorgeous, but not too sappy or sentimental! It also included Beer Unity Ceremony that she crafted special for us! We made a black and tan! mmm….

Motorco has some truly spectacular food at their restaurant Parts & Labor so we chose to do a buffet of heavy hors d’oeuvres from the Parts & Labor menu. We had a wide range of eclectic foods including vegan and vegetarian options. Seriously, go check them out next time you are in Durham!

We chose to serve two Featured Beers at the wedding, Trophy Brewing‘s Trophy Wife (an IPA) and Trophy Husband (a saison). Trophy became on of our absolute favorite breweries while we lived near their taproom in Raleigh, and this was a fun way to incorporate some of our favorites into our wedding. Everyone thought we made up the names, but we swear they are real beers!!

We did semi-DIY for dessert. I made a cake, because I simply love making cakes, but I knew I wouldn’t have time or ability to make a full size cake to feed all our guests. So I made an Almond Cake with Honey Lavender buttercream and we ordered a Black Forest Cake (James’ favorite) from Whole Foods Market. Bought a few macarons and tarts, because yum, and voila! Dessert for 65 people!

We really wanted our wedding to be fun and different. One of the kinda quirky things we decided to do was have a temporary tattoo station, which was a total hit! A good friend of mine is a designer at Tattly, so I ordered a bunch of their sweet tatts and we set them out with some sponges! Instant fun! Cheaper than traditional favors and more interactive, everyone had at least one by the end of the party!

The rest of the wedding was spent dancing, singing badly, and catching up with our amazing friends. We partied on into the night at with beers at Fullsteam Brewery and booze buckets, stripper poles, and lawn games down the street at The Bar. It is my official stance now that no wedding is complete without a Walk of Shame in your wedding dress. Also recommended, a comfy wedding dress and a change of shoes!
